Interview Profile: John Moore
Prior to our interview session, I had not had the opportunity to talk much with John, so I was looking forward to meeting with him and getting to learn more about a fellow student in the University Honors Program. John was born on May 27, 1996 in Claremont North Carolina, which is near Hickory. John, his parents and his older sister have lived in Claremont his entire life, but he would like to live in or near a city when he is older. Something that I found very interesting about John was that he spent his senior year of high school studying at Lenoir Rhyne University through their High School Scholars Program. John was able to complete almost all of his LBST classes through the program and says he really enjoyed the experience. In his first two years of high school, John was a member of his school’s golf team. A leg injury prevented him from continuing to play on the team his final two years of high school, but he still enjoys playing recreationally. John currently works for the Carolina Panthers as a Crowd Controller, which suits him perfectly as he has been a Panthers fan all of his life. John is a strong Christian of the Baptist denomination. John and I connected on our similar faiths and I admire him for striving to live his life based off the principles of the Bible.
John chose to come to UNC Charlotte due our school’s well-known Engineering Program. John is currently an Undecided Engineering major, but is considering majoring in Mechanical Engineering and specializing in Energy so that he may one day work in the field of solar and wind energy. Upon graduating from college, John plans to work as an entry-level engineer and eventually work his way up to having a job with Duke Energy. John initially applied to be a member of the University Honors Program because he wanted to room with a friend who was planning to live in Witherspoon and because the engineering department does not offer a separate honors program. He is satisfied with his decision to join UHP as he has met many new people and found a way to stand out amongst the many students here at UNCC.
When I asked John his opinion in reference to our summer reading book, The Yellow Birds, he admitted that the book wasn’t one of his favorite. John felt Powers definitely could have condensed the novel into five or six chapters instead of eleven, but felt that the book was well written overall and provided an important message to its readers.
Despite his demanding schedule as an engineering student and UHP member, John has had the opportunity to become involved in Intramural Volleyball this fall. He enjoyed the experience so much that he plans to play Flag Football in the spring. John is enjoying the start of his new life here at UNC Charlotte. Like many students, he wishes he had more time to explore the different activities the campus has to offer, but studying and classwork seem to be taking up most of his time. Thankfully, he has four years to make the most of his college experience and become involved with various organizations on campus.
I am so grateful for this opportunity to interview John. It was nice to have been able to connect with a classmate on a deeper level and learn about John’s life prior to coming to UNCC and his aspirations and plans beyond college.
